Gaffney was born and raised in San Diego, California, and got her start at the Old Globe Theater. Gaffney gained national attention when she wrote and starred with Kathy Najimy in the off-Broadway comedy sensation, The Kathy and Mo Show: Parallel Lives. Her critically acclaimed performance earned her an Obie Award. After the show ended its sold-out engagement, HBO taped the comedy and aired it as an hour-long special, which went on to win two Cable Ace Awards: Best Comedy Special and Best Performance in a Comedy Special. Gaffney then wrote, produced and starred in her second HBO special, Kathy and Mo: The Dark Side, which went on to win the same two Cable Ace Awards as the first special: Best Comedy Special and Best Performance in a Comedy Special.
Gaffney is also a familiar face on network television. She was a regular in the John Goodman sitcom Normal, Ohio for three seasons, played Paul and Jamie Buchman's therapist on Mad About You and recently had a recurring role on That 70's Show. Other television credits include Veronica's Closet, Tracey Takes On, Roseanne, The Naked Truth, The Louie Show, The Five Mrs. Buchanans, Ladies Man, Two Guys and a Girl, Friends and Eight Simple Rules. For three seasons Gaffney was a regular on the BBC television show The Full Wax, writing and starring in her own five-minute segments, Taffy Turner: Inside America. She also appeared as Bo in the BBC sitcom Absolutely Fabulous and in the two-hour special The Last Shout. She also co-starred in the Absolutely Fabulous: New York 2003 Christmas special. She hosted and co-produced the ground-breaking half-hour comedy/talk show Women Aloud! The show earned her two additional Cable Ace Awards.
Her big screen credits include Other People's Money, State of Grace, The Shot, Bogus, The Wedding Band, Happy, Texas, Inconceivable, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Home Schooling and Jailbait.
