Johnson is best known to television viewers for his starring role as Sonny Crockett on the cutting-edge drama series Miami Vice. He also directed six episodes of that series. His other television credits include From Here to Eternity, First You Cry, Elvis and the Beauty Queen, Centerfold, and the mini-series The Rebels and Beulah Land.

His feature film credits include A Boy and His Dog, Sweet Hearts Dance, Dead Bang, The Hot Spot, Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man, Paradise, Born Yesterday, Guilty as Sin, Tin Cup, and Goodbye, Lover.

For his own production company, he executive produced the acclaimed television film In the Company of Darkness and the series The Marshal.

Johnson's acting career began when he was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Kansas in Lawrence after being seen as the lead in a high school production of West Side Story. He studied there for two years before joining the American Conservatory Theatre.
