The role earned Bottoms a Golden Globe nomination as Most Promising Newcomer. He was subsequently cast as Sonny, the sensitive central character in Peter Bogdanovich's classic The Last Picture Show. The film was a huge critical and commercial success, made stars of Bottoms, Jeff Bridges, and Cybill Shepherd, and won Oscars for co-stars Ben Johnson and Cloris Leachman.
