Bentley is currently Hollywood's hottest newcomer, winning critical acclaim in his stellar performance of a troubled high school drug dealer opposite Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening and Chris Cooper in Sam Mendes' Oscar-winning black comedy, American Beauty. For his work in the film, he received the male breakthrough performance honor from the National Board of Review (which also cited the film as the Best Film of 1999) and the Most Promising Newcomer from the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also shared the Best Ensemble prize awarded by the Screen Actors Guild.

He also appeared in a small role alongside Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover in Jonathan Demme's epic drama, Beloved, and next stars opposite Sarah Polley and Nastassja Kinski in Michael Winterbottom's The Claim. He is currently working with Heath Ledger and Kate Hudson in Shekhar Kapur's Four Feathers.

Born-and-raised in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Bentley attended New York's prestigious Juilliard School, where he starred in several stage productions, including Henry IV, Part 1 and The Weavers.
