Under the stewardship of Messrs. Burns and Feltheimer, Lionsgate has grown its annual revenues from $150 million to nearly $1 billion in the past five years, increased its market capitalization from $80 million to approximately $1 billion, listed on the New York Stock Exchange and dramatically increased its analyst research coverage and blue-chip institutional sponsorship. Lionsgate has successfully acquired and integrated such companies as Trimark Holdings (2000), Artisan Entertainment (2003) and UK-based Redbus Film Distributors, Inc. (2005) on its way toward building a slate of 18 to 20 feature films a year and a prestigious and prolific 5500-title library that consistently generates more than $200 million in recurring revenue each year.
Mr. Burns played the lead role in the Company's successful completion of several common stock offerings and private placements of convertible debentures and notes, virtually eliminating Lionsgate's corporate bank debt by converting it into long-term subordinated debt at a blended annual rate of less than 4%. In addition to his leadership of Lionsgate's corporate management team, Mr. Burns has played a key role in the acquisition, production and distribution of some of Lionsgate's most successful films, including the Best Picture Academy Award -winning CRASH (2006), the Oscar-winning MONSTER'S BALL, and the creation of the SAW horror franchise, which has already grossed more than $250 million at the box office worldwide.
Lionsgate's feature films have generated more than $300 million at the domestic box office during each of the past two years, including such recent number one box office hits as SAW II, HOSTEL, MADEA'S FAMILY REUNION and the Academy Award winning CRASH, which earned three Oscars. The highly diversified company also features a vibrant television business with nine prime time cable network series, including the critical sensation Weeds, a $500-million-a-year home entertainment business and a large minority interest in a video-on-demand company CinemaNow, showcasing Internet-delivered feature films drawn from most of the major studios. Mr. Burns is a member of the CinemaNow Board of Directors.
Mr. Burns has recently been profiled or featured in such varied major media outlets as AMC Sunday Morning Shootout, Barron's, Business Week, CBS MarketWatch, CNBC, the Financial Times of London, Fortune, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, and has been a featured speaker on a wide range of media, trade and other issues at such diverse forums as the Vancouver, British Columbia Board of Trade, the Los Angeles-based Association for Corporate Growth and a leading New Mexico economic development council.
Previously, Mr. Burns served for nine years as managing director and head of Prudential Securities' Los Angeles investment banking office. While at Prudential, he specialized in raising equity within the media and entertainment industry. Prior to joining Prudential, he spent nine years at Shearson Lehman Brothers (now Citigroup Smith Barney) in New York and Los Angeles.
On the entrepreneurial front, Mr. Burns has served as chairman of Ignite Entertainment, a Los Angeles-based entertainment production company, which independently produced such films as DANCER, TEXAS POP. 81, DESERT BLUE, THE SUBURBANS, POSSUMS, GET OVER IT and cult classics SIX-STRING SAMURAI and BUT, I'M A CHEERLEADER. He was cofounder of the Hollywood Stock Exchange (www.hsx.com) and serves as chairman and cofounder of Novica.com (www.novica.com) (in association with National Geographic), a company with a global infrastructure enabling thousands of artists around the world to directly access the global marketplace through online and wholesale channels. Mr. Burns has also been honored for his achievements with the Distinguished Leadership Award from The American Ireland Fund.
Mr. Burns is an executive producer on the upcoming teen comedy EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH, starring Dane Cook and Jessica Simpson, slated for October 2006 release, as well as a producer on this year's Cannes Film Festival's Fipresci Prize winner BUG, starring Ashley Judd and directed by Academy AwardÂ -winning director William Friedkin, slated for release in May 2007. Mr. Burns is a voting member of the Motion Picture Academy of Arts & Sciences.
Mr. Burns graduated with a B.S. from Arizona State University and received his M.B.A. from the John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management at the University of California at Los Angeles.
