Francis Veber

Veber is one of the preeminent comic film directors and screenwriters in all of Europe. He wrote his first film screenplay in 1969 and directed his first film, Le Jouet (The Toy), in 1976. He directed his first American film, Three Fugitives, in 1989, and his first stage play, Le diner de cons in 1993 (he directed the film version The Dinner Game in 1997).

Prior to directing, he was known for writing some of the most successful French comedies including Tall Blond Man With One Black Shoe (1972), L'emmerdeur (A Pain in the A…, 1973), Le magnifique (The Magnificent One, 1973), Le jouet (The Toy, 1976), La cage aux folles (Birds of a Feather, 1978), La Chèvre (The Goat, 1981), Le compères (1983), Les fugitifs (1986), Le jaguar (1996), and Le diner de cons (The Dinner Game, 1998).

In addition to THE CLOSET, Veber's directing filmography includes: Le jouet (The Toy, 1976), La Chèvre (The Goat, 1981), Les compères (1983), Les fugitifs (1986), Three Fugitives (1989), Out on a Limb (1992), Le jaguar (1996), and Le diner de cons (The Dinner Game, 1998). His upcoming film is Dinner for Schmucks starring Kevin Kline.

Veber became President of EFVE Films in 1976, and Escape Film Production Company in 1988. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors for EuroDisney in 1988, was a member of Chevalier, Legion d'honneur, and Officier des Arts et des Lettres.

Veber has been living in the United States for fifteen years now. His films, however, are uniquely French. Veber mused, "I never thought of myself as being French, my mother was Russian and I thought of myself as being international. But I suddenly realized this simply isn't true. Somewhere in me there lies a French chromosome that is very dominant. I live in America, but I make comedies the French way."
