Gene Quintano made his directorial debut in 1990 with For Better or For Worse, starring Robert Hayes and Kim Cattrall. He went on to write and direct Why Me?, starring Christopher Lloyd and J.T. Walsh, and National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon I, starring Emilio Estevez and Samuel L. Jackson.

Quintano's additional writing credits include Sudden Death, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme; Operation Dumbo Drop, starring Danny Glover, Ray Liotta and Denis Leary; Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold, starring Sharon Stone and Richard Chamberlain; and Police Academy 3: Back in Training and Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol.
