Biography #2 (for Hysterical Blindness)

Mira Nair directed several award-winning documentaries before making her stunning feature debut, Salaam Bombay! Salaam Bombay! was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1988 and, in addition to 25 international awards, received the Camera D'Or (for best first feature) and the Prix du Publique (for most popular entry) at the Cannes Film Festival. Ms. Nair's subsequent films included Mississippi Masala (1991), The Perez Family (1995), and the art house hit Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996). She also directed My Own Country, about a young immigrant doctor dealing with the AIDS epidemic in the Deep South, for Showtime in 1998. In addition to MONSOON WEDDING, Ms. Nair recently completed the documentary The Laughing Club of India, which was awarded the Special Jury Prize in the Festival International de Programmes Audiovisuels 2000 and will premiere in the United States on HBO. Ms. Nair was born in India and was educated at Delhi University and at Harvard.
