Biography #2 (for A Foreign Affair)
Since the 1950s, the legendary Lois Smith has appeared in a number of memorable films, including the classics EAST OF EDEN and FIVE EASY PIECES, which garnered her a Best Supporting Actress Award from the National Society of Film Critics in 1970. Other credits include 2002's MINORITY REPORT; THE PLEDGE; TUMBLEWEEDS; FRIED GREEN TOMATOES; GREEN CARD; DEAD MAN WALKING; and TWISTER.Smith was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Tony in 1990 for The Grapes of Wrath and in 1996 for Buried Child. Her other Broadway credits include Blues for Mr. Charlie; Orpheus Descending; The Young and the Beautiful; and Time Out for Ginger. Off-Broadway, she has appeared in The Vagina Monologues; Defying Gravity and Dog Logic both for the American Place Theatre; Dog Logic for the Circle Repertory; and The Glass Menagerie at City Center.
Smith studied with Lee Strasberg at the Actors' Studio and taught at the Julliard. She is a member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago and currently resides in New York City.
