Polish Wedding marks Theresa Connelly's debut as a film director. The script, her first feature-length screenplay, attracted the attention of the Sundance Institute and in 1994 she was invited to the Screenwriter's and Director's Labs.

Connelly has been awarded fellowships to Yaddo, Ragdale and Helene Wurlitzer artist colonies. She attended Barnard College, but left school to travel abroad, traveling to the Soviet Union where she enrolled in the literature department of Leningrad State University. She subsequently lived and studied for several years in Marseilles, Paris and Berlin. When she returned to New York, she began directing plays in off-off Broadway theaters.

Connelly grew-up in Detroit in the Polish neighborhood portrayed in Polish Wedding.
